The Jesuit Church of the virgin Mary – one of the most beautiful churches in Warsaw. The temple is situated in the Old town.

The Church was founded by king Sigismund III on the initiative of Peter Skarga in 1609 for the Jesuits. Reliable information about the architect not, but historians suggest that the author of the project was Jan Frankiewicz by building a Church in the style of Polish mannerism.

In 1640 cardinal Karl Ferdinand Vasa granted the Church a luxurious silver altar, which was stolen in 1656 the Swedish troops. In 1660 the Church was opened a pharmacy, which was used by all the inhabitants of Warsaw. After 8 years in the Church were held lectures on theology and philosophy. In 1720, began construction of two-storey building at the rear of the Church on the initiative of Bishop Louis Bartholomew Zaluski. The new building housed a school, a pharmacy and a rich Church library. In subsequent years, the Church flourished: there was a rich Baroque furnishings, marble altar and new floors were built two chapels.

In 1773 the Jesuits were expelled from the Church, the Church became a parish school under the guidance of the National Commission on education. The Jesuits were able to return to the Church of the virgin Mary in 1918. In the 20-ies and 30-ies were repaired, and a decade later the Church was almost completely destroyed in the blast during the Second world war. The construction of the new Church was conducted from 1950 to 1973. From the original decoration has been preserved fragments of the tombstone of Jan Tarlo, the icon of the Mother of God, brought to Poland in 1651 by Bishop Juan de Torres as a gift from Pope innocent X.

The angels ' front doors were made in 2009 by the sculptor Igor Mitoraj as an exact copy of the doors in the Roman Church of Santa Maria del Angeli. The gift was timed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Church of the virgin Mary.
