Orthodox Church of saints Cyril and Methodius is situated on a Sandy island. This small Church was previously known as the St. James Church. It belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, all services here were held in Latin. It was erected in the XVII century in Baroque style.
This Church was the first religious structure built in Wroclaw Baroque. Something in terms of the future Church was not satisfied with the city Council, so he froze the construction of the temple indefinitely. Only the intervention of monarch – king Leopold I – have led to the construction of the Church was brought to its logical end. Grateful residents have placed at the top of the facade of the Church the image of the Imperial coat of arms, on a field which had the initials of the ruler. The Church was also decorated with several sculptures of saints, patrons of this Church.
The temple was badly damaged during the hostilities of the Second world war. To restore it came from the Polish Orthodox Church. The city authorities gave her a plot of land with a ruined Church in 1970. To design the interior had to begin from scratch: from the previous Church décor was nothing left. The icon was brought from Warsaw, and the iconostasis was taken from the village Stronic. The vaults and walls of the Church were painted by experienced craftsmen, sketches for murals created by artist Adam Stallone-Dobrzanski. At the end of XX century the Church was consecrated by the names of saints Cyril and Methodius, also received new stained-glass Windows with biblical themes.
As a result of restoration of the Church was found the old crypt, now conduct the Liturgy.
In our day, worship in the temple is the Polish, old Church Slavonic and Greek languages.
