Yakutsk state academic drama theatre named after P. A. Oyunsky is pride and a bright exponent of the national principle in art in Yakutia. Through the promotion of theatrical performances in the Sakha Republic was created the preconditions for the founding of the national theatre. In 1925 it was decided to create the people's Yakut national theatre troupe. The academic history of the theater began in October 1925 with the production of the Comedy "Evil spirit" N. Neustroev.

In 1926 at the request of the people's Committee of health and education of the Yakut Republic, the Council of people's Commissars of the Yakut ASSR was created Yakut national theatre. Supervised theatre poet and playwright A. Sofronov-Alana. In the repertoire of those times came in such performances as: "Those years" (A. Kunda), "Game of life" (A. Sofronov), "Red shaman" and "Bolshevik Basil" (P. oiunskii), as well as some translations for the Yakut language plays "Zakharova death" (A. Neverov), the lower depths (Gorky) and "Red eagle" (M. Zadonsky). Improvement of professional skill of the Yakut actors were held in the theatre workshop, which was led by the Director of the Russian theatre I. saprygin, as well as in the Studio, which was organized at the famous theatre Director A. Glebov.

In 1934, the theatre received the name of the social worker and the founder of Soviet literature in Yakutia P. A. Oyunsky. In 1942, the theatre received the status of musical drama. From 1961 to 1983 the chief Director of the Yakut drama F. Potapov worked. He produced a lot of interesting productions that are included in the basic repertoire of those years. In 1971 musical and dramatic troupe was divided into two separate companies - Yakut state drama theatre named after P. A. Oyunsky and Yakut musical theatre.

The huge success of the theatre over the past two decades is directly linked with the name of his Borisov. In 1983 he became the chief Director of the theater, and in 1990 its artistic Director. It then began a new stage in the history of the Yakut drama. In 1986, A. Borisov together with the art Director G. Sotnikov, performer of the main roles E. Stepanov, S. Fedotov, G. Vasiliev was awarded the State prize of the USSR. The academic title, the theatre was awarded in 1995
