Museum of the writer I. D. Vasilenko in Taganrog is located on Chekhova street, on the shore of the Azov sea in the small one-storey house built in 1906. From 1923 to 1966 here with his large family lived and worked as a children's writer Ivan Dmitrievich Vasilenko.

Ivan D. was born 20 January 1895 in the village, now the city of Makeyevka of Donetsk region in the family of a district clerk. He was 7 years old when the family moved to Taganrog. Being a teacher by training, he became a writer at the age of 39, when a serious illness (exacerbated tuberculosis) was lying on the bed. Writer-teacher I. D. Vasilenko writes for children and about children, his novels and stories have won him wide popularity and was published in almost 30 languages of the world. In the Newspapers of the time his name is mentioned with the A. Barto, composer Dmitry Shostakovich, sculptor E. Vuchetich, artistic Director of the ensemble A. Alexandrov. On the works Vasilenko "Asterisk", "Artemka in the circus", "the Magic box" created by children's movies.

During the great Patriotic war by I. D. Vasilenko worked in army print. I. D. Vasilenko died in Taganrog in may 1966 and was buried at old city cemetery. Name I. D. Vasilenko named children's library in Taganrog (Taganrog branch city library. A. P. Chekhov).

In 1988 the former apartment of the writer donated to the Museum-reserve. In may 2004, the Museum opened the exhibition on personal and social life of the writer, his creative and personal life and environment. The house features original study and four bathrooms. One time there was a youth Department of Chekhov library. In 2008, the Museum opened an exhibition devoted to the cycle of works about Artemka. In 2010, close to home I. Vasilenko in Taganrog was opened a monument to the literary hero Artemka (sculptor David Begalov).
