Argos is the oldest town of Europe, its history dates back more than 5,000 years. One of the oldest in the world and is considered the Argos fortress located just 5 km from the centre of Argos. It is sometimes called the fortress of Larissa the eponymous name of the hill on which it is located. The hill received its name in honor of the daughter of the Pelasgian, the founder of Argos. The fortress of Larissa is located 298 meters above sea level. The Fort offers a great view of the city and the Aegean sea.
The very first castle of Argos was founded in the 6th century BC, during the middle ages in the Central part of the hill to the ancient ruins of a castle was built. Convenient location, proximity to the sea and a beautiful fertile valley, stretching at the foot of the hill, has always attracted invaders. During its history the castle repeatedly changed its owners, each of which is updated and completed. At various times, the fortress was inhabited by Greeks, Byzantines, crusaders, Venetians and Turks.
In the Byzantine period the fortress was of great strategic importance. Since the 13th century it was ruled by the crusaders. In 1388, this territory came under the control of the Venetians until 1463, when the power was taken by the Turks. Except for a small period of time with 1686 po year, when the fortress was under the control of the Venetian Admiral Morosini, the Turks owned the castle until 1822.
The fortress consists of an inner castle with its fortifications and the outside of the fortress with massive walls. Basically it's medieval fortifications with towers of different shapes, although some fragments of the walls belong to the ancient period. Also on the territory of the fortress you can see the underground tunnels, closed today lattices. During archaeological excavations in the early 20th century it was discovered and the Byzantine Church of the virgin, built by the Bishop of Argos Nikita in the middle of the 12th century. The centuries-old history and many owners have transformed the castle into a curious construction, which is closely intertwined many eras and cultures.
Today the ruins of the fortress are not protected and open to the public. On top of the hill is accessible both on foot and by car.
