The Church of the Transfiguration in the City is located in Yaroslavl, on Post street, 3. Like many other Yaroslavl churches, it was built on the site of a former wooden Church in the 72nd year of the XVII century.

Church of the Saviour on a gentle slope leading to the Bank of the Kotorosl, first mentioned in the XIII century, since that time, when Yaroslavl was the center of an independent Principality, independent of Moscow. Its name derives probably from being on public auction or from a nearby tower Earthen walls of the city. The temples, built of wood, this place was many times destroyed by fire and rebuilt. The last wooden Church of the Savior on the City died in 1658 in a devastating town fire.

Saviour Church of stone was built in 1672 on donations of merchant I. Kislova. The architectural style of the Church was typical for Yaroslavl of the seventeenth century, characterized by the absence of a basement, the presence of the chapel and bell tower in the North-Western corner of the gallery.

Architecture the Church of the Savior similar to Johanneslotovagen temple in Barns. In fact, the Church in Barns and served as a model for construction. The Central quadrangle of the volume is characterized by small size, however this is compensated by a massive five domes: the main drum of the dome (even without the cross) has the same height as that of the quadrangle. The head on the sides are also quite large and powerful. The reels of the Church is decorated more lavishly than the walls. The most richly decorated facade on the North side. It is aimed at ex-trade area − this suggests that the temple was built according to location.

Especially with Church wedding chapel Archdeacon Stephen, located on the North-Eastern side – a tall, slender tent surrounded by a number of innovative features and completes a small cupola. It gives the building a picturesque asymmetry.

On the South side joins the Church warm side chapel of St. Nicholas (now St. Seraphim of Sarov). He was converted in 1831 in the classical style and brought a certain dissonance in the appearance of the South facade of the temple. In the same time the porch was built.

Painting the interior of the building was completed very quickly − about six months of the summer of 1693. Worked here most of Yaroslavl team of makers, consisting of 22 people, under the leadership of Lawrence Sevastyanov and Fedor Fedorov. The contractor is local Posad man Ivan Ivanov Kem.

Some of the Church's frescoes were seriously damaged during restoration work carried out here in the 1860's. Some brands, mostly in the chancel, were rewritten.

During the Civil war Spassky Cathedral was severely damaged, and in 1919-1920 he was restored. In the autumn of 1929 the Church was abolished. Then it has a warehouse, operating for quite a long time.

In August 2003, the first honey Savior in the Church of the Transfiguration in the City again melodiously rang the bell. Worship services are conducted mainly in the southern aisle.

Despite the simple decoration of the Saviour Church, under the jurisdiction of the Yaroslavl Museum-reserve, the massive five domes and two tent make it one of the most beautiful churches on the embankment of the Kotorosl rivers.
