The monastery of the Holy spirit – one of the most important historical monuments in the city, is located in the old centre of Aalborg in the area Gammel Torv and streets Obel-place.
In the early 15th century Aalborg was one of the biggest cities in Europe. Residents in those times was considered quite wealthy, for this reason in Aalborg on earnings was impossible to get a large number of people - Danes and foreigners. This contributed to the emergence of poor people, with no shelter, no food, no medical care. Maren Hemmings was quite a wealthy woman and decided to help the poor, arranging funds for their shelter.
August 20, 1431 on inherited his father's land Maren began construction of the future monastery of the Holy spirit, but in 1434, during the great fire, the temple burned to the ground. Over time, was built a new monastery, which we can see now. In the monastery in 1451, the monks of the order of the Holy spirit opened a hospital and a shelter for the poor and the orphans.
The temple was built of red brick in the Gothic style, inside the Church walls and ceilings are decorated with unique frescoes of biblical subjects. The monastery was gorgeous garden and fountain.
In the early 16th century, the monastery of the Holy spirit was transformed from a poor orphanage in a thriving organization. At the temple there was built a farm, a mill, an extra income to the temple brought the production of bricks and fisheries. During the reformation in the 16th century the monastery of the Holy spirit has lost its religious component, having an ordinary orphanage and hospital. The Abbey Church was destroyed by the inhabitants of the city.
In 1953, the monastery of the Holy spirit was returned to the spiritual status, posted here a home. Today the monastery is open to the public.
