Important historical attraction in Aalborg is the Church of the virgin Mary. Originally the building was a small Church, but Church on the site was erected a monastery, which was impressive for its size.
Presumably, the Benedictine monastery was built in 1116, although the opinions of historians differ: some argue that the founding date - year 1132. It is known that in 1140 in the walls of the Church was buried the Norwegian king Sigurd Magnusson, as evidenced by the records of the monastery of the priest Chelda of Calvet's.
By the mid-16th century the Abbey consisted of a monastery Church, monastic cells and outhouses. Later the temple of the virgin Mary became one of the major parish churches of the city. Due to the dilapidation of the building in 1876 it was decided to demolish it and at the same place to build a new Church. Two years later there was built a new Church in the Gothic style, from the old building was only two bells and the remains of a stone carving on the Western pediment.
Now particularly impressive is the temple tower with a spire and porch with a relief depicting the virgin Mary. Inside the Church there is an organ, which was built in 1961 (decorated with gold and flowers, a beautiful historical Department, carved out of wood in 1581, and the baptistery of the seventeenth century and the late Gothic crucifix. Until 1902, the building of the Cathedral was placed the altar of the seventeenth century, but because of the fire it burned down and was replaced with a new one.
Each year, the monastery is visited by many tourists from around the world.
