Center for the Arts "Araluen, combining the 4 galleries and a theatre, is the most important place in Alice springs for exhibitions and performances. It was opened in 1984.
The main focus of the galleries is the work of aboriginal artists of Central Australia, as well as contemporary art. They are the works since the 1930-ies till nowadays. An important part of the collection consists of works by the artist albert Namatjira, who played an important role in the promotion of local aboriginal art; intricate works of Papunya and the work of contemporary artists living in remote communities. Among the interesting exhibits of the center – collection "desert Weavers Tjanpi", consisting of 81 item woven by women from the region of the Central Deserts. Here you can see the basket, animal figurines and sculptures made of EMU feathers, fur, grass, beads and other materials. In another collection 30 items of clothing of indigenous Australians. Since 1991 Araluen" holds an annual arts festival "Desert Mob", which represents new work.
The theatre centre, can accommodate 500 people, provides the stage in drama, dance and music events. It often hosts screenings of art-house cinema.
Of particular interest is the building of the centre "Araluen" - it is built next to the 300-year-old cork tree in the Sculpture Garden. This tree is located near a Large hill Sisters considered sacred by the aboriginal tribe "arrernte". In addition, the center Araluen" is a Cultural Area of the city of Alice springs is close to Museum of Central Australia, Research Centre "Strehlow", Aviation Museum of Central Australia, Central a Handicraft Shop and the sculpture "Ieperen".
