Jewish Museum of Rhodes Photo: Jewish Museum of Rhodes

The famous Greek island of Rhodes attracts huge number of tourists not only for its magnificent natural landscapes and interesting cultural and historical sights.

Resting in Rhodes, you should definitely visit the Jewish Museum. It is located in the homonymous capital of the island in the old Jewish quarter in premises that are part of the Synagogue Kahal Shalom (the oldest synagogue in Greece, built in 1577, and only in Rhodes).

Jewish Museum of Rhodes was founded in 1997 by Aaron Hassan for the purpose of preserving and promoting the history and culture of the Jews of Rhodes, rooted in the II century B. C. Originally, the Museum was equipped in two rooms previously used as a prayer room for women. The Museum includes photographs, important historical documents, costumes, household items and much more. Here you can see the marriage contracts, the Jewish theological books, as well as Turkish travel document that was issued in 1910 by the Sultan Mehmet Solve 20-year-old Isaac Nissim Ben Veniste (document allowed to travel with the family in another country). On the Museum stands you will find a huge number of photographs illustrating the life of the Jewish community on the island in different historical periods.

Thanks Aaron Hassan and he founded the Jewish Historical Fund over time, the Museum collection has expanded considerably. Were collected a huge number of unique relics from all over the world. In 2004 the Museum was closed for renovation. Was conducted not only planned overhaul, but also a significant increase in exhibition space. The two existing halls was extended by another four spaces, which allowed thoroughly to increase the exposure and to present to the public a number of new exhibits.
