The competition was won by 20-year-old Giles Gilbert Scott, who by that time had not yet completed his studies, has not built a single building, and also belonged to the Catholic faith.

Large changes have taken place in the decoration of the Cathedral, many of the elements of neo-Gothic style was replaced with more modern and monumental.

The first world war greatly delayed the construction, which resumed in 1920. It was planned to complete by 1940, but due to the outbreak in 1939 of world war II construction slowed further, besides the Cathedral was damaged by the bombing.

Fully the Cathedral was only completed in 1978. Its length is 189 meters, and the height of the Central tower is 101 meters.
