Mountain AI-Petri is one of the sights of the Crimea. The name of the mountain in Greek means "Saint Peter". The name derives from the Greek monastery of St. Peter, who was in the Middle ages on the plateau of AI-Petri.
The height of AI-Petri - 1234 meters above sea level. The last 200 years, the land where now stands the AI-Petri huge amount of time were derived from the sea level and exposed to exogenous effects, then again plunged into the abyss of the sea. In the middle ages people lived on the Northern slopes of the mountain. On the plateau were found many Paleolithic tools from silicon (scrapers, knives), testifying to the hunt of the primitive inhabitants.
After the Turkish conquest in the late 15th century plateau mountains were empty and were used only for grazing cattle. Nowadays it is part of the Crimean nature reserve. More there were no settlements, people chose more comfortable climatic conditions for life. In 1895 occurs on top of the weather station, which was founded by a branch of the physical Observatory of Pulkovo.
The length of the cable car was 3, 5 kilometers. Between stations Pine and AI-Petri, no supporting towers, the distance is about two kilometers. This passage of the cable car without is considered the longest in Europe.
AI-Petri are interesting excursions. Tourists usually visit the AI-Petri Meridian – stone globe with precise geodetic data, the observation platform on the cliff Shishko, weather station, mountain Bedene-KYR, the three-eye cave, equipped for excursions. On the slope of the highway from Yalta AI Petri you can see the "drunk" pine grove - ancient forest of pine Crimean infringed by a landslide.
