Cathedral of San Sebastian, built in the years 1876-1885, today is one of the most beautiful churches of the city of Bacolod and Negros island. Although the parish in Bacolod city was founded in 1788, for a long time there was no permanent priest and the prayer of the Church. Believers attended a small wooden chapel, built of bamboo and the NIPs.

In 1817 parish priest was appointed father Julian Gonzaga, who erected a small Church made of wood with a metal roof just West of the place where today stands the Cathedral. He, in 1825, began to collect corals from the bottom of the Guimaras Strait to build a stone Church. Unfortunately, Gonzaga was not destined to wait for the fulfillment of their dreams – he died in 1836.

Only in 1876, began construction of the stone Church in Bacolod city under the guidance of a priest Mauricio Ferrero of Augustinian of Recollection. Interestingly, Ferrero was the architect not only of the future Cathedral and the residence of the priest, but also the city jail in exchange for this service, the Governor of the province ordered to send some prisoners to build a new Church. In 1882, a solemn consecration of the Church, but the bell tower-the twins were only completed in 1885. They gave the Church a distinctive Western look. In the same year, a local philanthropist josé Ruiz de Luzuriaga gave a great watch for the right of the bell tower, were added choirs and an organ. And in 1932 the Church received the status of a Cathedral, as in Bacolod was created diocese.

Later, in 1969, the Cathedral had to carry out restoration work: worn vintage bell began to be dangerous and have been replaced by concrete, were also removed silver altar and ceiling murals.

Inside the Cathedral leads to the portico, consisting of three arches of equal size. On the side of the main entrance is a statue of the Builder of the Church father Ferrero. The interior of the Cathedral is rather simple, if not strict, but very enjoyable. And the beauty is created not so much the ornaments and decorations, how modulation of arches and columns. In the courtyard of the Cathedral you can see the bell, which in 1976 was removed from the belfry. And nearby is the monastery, built in the late 19th century from coral stones. Today it houses the residence of the Bishop.
