The shell Museum, or the Malacological Museum, was founded by doctor of theology and estestvoznanii a Jour Radić in the walls of the 500-year-old Franciscan convent of St. Mary in the town of Makarska, lying on the Adriatic sea.

This Museum is world famous and happy tourists an interesting collection of sea snails and shellfish from around the world. When collecting Malacological collections Jour Radic also added in the Museum store valuable herbaria from the slopes of the mountains, at the foot of which is Makarska. Also the Museum has a small collection of paleontological finds. However, of particular interest Malacological Museum is the hall of shells of marine molluscs.

The creation and systematic replenishment of the collection was dedicated to the work of many scholars in the natural Sciences. Jour Radic developed the Museum with the support of many people. He has collaborated with scientists, Museum workers, collectors. And especially he was helped by his faithful colleague, the theologian France Karev.

The Museum was opened to the public on 30 June 1963 in the basement of the monastery. Now the Museum displays more than 3000 shells. There you can see many kinds of clams, mussels and snails, which are found not only on the shores of the Adriatic sea, but also on the shores of tropical and subtropical seas. They attract attention with unusual color scheme and the shape of the shell.
