Antalya archeological Museum is located on a mountain in the Western part of town near Antalya. This is one of the most important attractions of Antalya. The history of the Museum begins in 1919, when Antalya was occupied by the Italian troops. At that time Italian archaeologists arrived in the city in order to collect the maximum number of artifacts found during excavations, and took them to Italy. To prevent the export of cultural heritage managed Suleyman Fikri Bey, who was the teacher of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Later the collection was located in the mosque, Tekeli Mehmet Pasha, and the official status of the Museum was granted in 1937.
The Museum has more than 2000 exhibits. Archaeological work continues, thanks to the new Museum exhibits. Currently this Museum is the largest in Turkey and is one of the most famous museums in the world. In the Museum 13 rooms, which cover an area of 7000 sq. m.
1 hall – Children. Artifacts of this hall are the ancient piggy Bank and toys. Children are given the possibility to sculpt a vase or a statuette made of clay or paint. Crafted creations you can donate to the Museum, and you can take a souvenir.
2 hall – Natural history and prehistoric times. Hall will be interesting for lovers of ancient history. Among the exhibits of the skeleton and teeth of a Neanderthal, digging, axes, scrapers, arrowheads and other tools belonging to different centuries.
3 hall – Miniatures-1. In this hall are displayed the entire history of the evolution of the ceramic case, Dating from the 12th century BC Presents vases and various ornaments of various sizes.
4 hall of Gods. All exhibits of this hall are connected with the gods of antiquity: statues depicting the gods; the black cubes, which are a symbol of the battle of the Amazons; and griffins, gorgeous vases, etc.
5 hall – Miniatures-2. Here are selected works, vases and figurines, decorations and tableware. One of the exhibits of this hall is a silver plate with engraving depicting the head of Athena. In the center, established articles of Zeus, Aphrodite, Artemis, Fortune and other gods. The statue of Hercules, made of bronze, was raised from the seabed in Foca. Also made of bronze statues of Apollo and Hermes. Also there is an underwater showcase of artifacts that were found on sunken ships. Among the exhibits many Serebryany and gold jewelry.
Hall 6 – Emperors. In the hall are portraits, busts, figurines and statues of emperors, made of marble, clay and gypsum. Portraits of Sabina, Faustina, Hadrian, Trajan, etc.
7 hall – the Sarcophagi. Presents sarcophagi, Dating from the Roman Empire. Here you can also see urns and funeral steles.
Hall 8 – Icons. In the hall gathered many icons.
9 hall – Mosaic. Presents a variety of ancient mosaics. The main showpiece of this room is the mosaic, which are composed of the names of philosophers.
10 hall – Coins. The oldest coin in this hall, more than 2500 years old.
11-13 halls – a Set of three halls forms the Department of Ethnography.
The Museum also has galleries and the children's room under the open sky, which represented about 5000 exhibits and the Museum store is about 30,000 copies.
