The monument to Christ the Redeemer of the Andes Photo: the Monument to Christ the Redeemer of the Andes

The history of the monument to Christ the Redeemer of the Andes originated in the late 19th century, a period of military conflict between Argentina and Chile. The question was tried to be solved through peaceful negotiations, and one of the suggestions was the creation of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, the symbol of peace and prosperity. The proposal was accepted. The statue decided to install on the border of the two countries on the slopes of the Andes.

The monument was designed by Brazilian sculptor MATEO Alonso. The sculpture is a six-meter granite pedestal and set on it, the statue of Christ height of about 7 meters. In one hand he has a cross and the other he blesses two people. Material to create the statue was old weapons that remained in Argentina after the war for independence against the Spanish invaders.

Despite the fact that the statue was set in a desolate place, the opening ceremony was visited by several thousand residents of Argentina and Chile. A magnificent ceremony was opened not only a monument but also a few commemorative plaques, which are still close.

Several times the statue of Christ the Redeemer suffered from bad weather and seismic activity typical of that region. It was restored and rebuilt the individual elements.

Every day to look at the sculpture attracts many tourists from all over the world.

Recently the monument to Christ the Redeemer was over a hundred years, but still it is a symbol of peace and understanding. On the pedestal is an inscription which reads: "Rather, these mountains crumble to dust than the Chileans and the Argentines will disturb the peace, who has vowed to save at the feet of Christ the Redeemer".
