Paleontological Museum of the city of Asenovgrad reasonably considered one of the most interesting in the country. His exposition is based on the collection of fossils, collected over thirty years by the scholar-Amateur Dimitar Kovachev together with local school children. Over time, however, the collection of artifacts became much larger due to the work of many specialists and the staff of the Museum includes professional paleontologists. The first Museum exposition was officially opened in 1995 and is dedicated mainly to the evolution of prehistoric animals. According to experts, one of the most significant exhibits, presented here, is the fossilized skeleton of a four-meter dinosaur Turolian of Dinotherium, brought here from ezerovo.
Later opened the exhibition, located on the second floor of the Museum. In her thirty halls visitors can get acquainted with the diversity of prehistoric flora and fauna of Bulgaria period of the Mesozoic era.
In the Paleontological Museum presents the only surviving full skeleton of a prehistoric hyena, found in Bulgaria, and the only entirely preserved head of a saber-toothed tiger. In addition, the collection of the Museum you can find a copy of the skeleton tiger of metaleros, fossils monkey mesopithecus Delson, mastodons, antelopes, gazelles, horses hipparions, and many others. On the first floor are shown the remains of huge proboscidean – dinotherium that weighed more than 12 thousand pounds and lived 8 million years ago in the marshy areas. This instance is unique since it it most preserved bones.
The already impressive Fund of the Museum is complemented by ocean fossils, marine corals, fossilized remains of reptiles and turtles. Assenovgrad collection of vertebrates of Miocene Neogene and has more than 25 thousand exhibits forty different species. It also caters for active paleontological study of the fossilized remains of ancient animals, many of which are still poorly understood and almost unknown to modern science.
