In the heart of Astrakhan in one of the historic mansions on Akhmatova street by a group of enthusiasts in 1999 was equipped Astrakhan aquarium, or the House-Museum of sturgeon. Initially in the exhibition were several aquariums with river and tropical fish, exotic animals, crocodiles and a separate aquarium of the sturgeon fish. The Museum staff noticed that sturgeon are of most interest to visitors and expanded exhibition dedicated to this type of fish.
Astrakhan has not yet ceased to be called the fishing capital, despite the almost complete absence of sturgeon catches in the Volga and Caspian fishermen. The thirst for a quick profit, the high price of caviar has led to their almost complete disappearance in natural waters and the appearance on the Museum shelves. Exhibits – Beluga, sevruga, sturgeon. The sturgeon is the main exhibit and the sensation of the exposition, about the king of the Volga depths of the current generation only knows the stories of the parents, which is why before the Museum staff has the task to revive the former glory of the fishing capital. The exhibits were collected almost a year and a half, helped by local residents, scientists of the southern scientific center of RAS and the Astrakhan state University, representatives of the fish processing plants.
The beginning of the Museum exhibition shows the past and present of sturgeon on the walls hang pictures of fishermen, pulling a full network of individual large specimens of representatives of the sturgeon. The exposition of the Museum is small, but its uniqueness lies in the fact that there are six species of sturgeon, there are even Siberian sturgeon - this species is very rare. Throughout Asia and the Americas today, there are about twenty species of sturgeon, so the Astrakhan region is out of competition in species composition. Local authorities and the scientific community today are working to restore the natural habitat of this fish.
