Aveiro is a city with a rich historical past. He is considered one of the most interesting cities in Portugal, and because of the many built canals called "the Portuguese Venice". The town sits on the coast of the Atlantic ocean and is located 220 km from Lisbon.

The city's history begins in the tenth century. Due to its proximity to the ocean Aveiro was quite a large seaport, and was famous for its fishermen. In addition to fishing, the population was still engaged in the extraction of salt, thanks to the Providence of Aveiro quickly began to flourish. Initially it was a small settlement, which in the XIII century, it was given city status. Aveiro was a successful town until the sixteenth century. In 1575 there was a severe storm that brought a lot of sand and silt, and blocked the harbour. Today Aveiro again thriving.

The city has many monuments, some of which are listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Lovers of medieval architecture should definitely visit the historic city center, where city hall, paços do Conselho. The town hall was built in the XVIII century Tuscan style, which in Portugal is quite rare. Near the town hall stands the pillory - Pelourinho de Esgueira, built in the second half of the eighteenth century, and replaced another pole, more ancient, set in the early sixteenth century. In 1933 the pillory was included in the list of monuments of local value.
