The Pont d'avignon is situated on the rhône river, close to the Palais des Papes. He is known for several reasons. This bridge was immortalized in a children's song of the XV century "Sur le Pont d'avignon", sung by children around the world. For example, in China it is even taught in school. In the twentieth century, this song was sung by the inimitable Mireille Mathieu.

Of course, the Pont d'avignon and has historical value. The legend about it is very beautiful. In the XII century 12 year old boy Benoit was a divine vision. The angel told him to go and build a bridge across the river. And little Benoit was building the bridge. Construction was delayed for 8 years and went from 1177 to 1185 years. Later little Benoit became known as the Holy Beneze, his name and wears the bridge.

Upon completion, the bridge had 22 arch span and the length of 915 m and connects France and the papal States. He was the first crossing for travellers and traders on their way by Ron from the sea. There were border posts, as well as the collection of taxes and duties.

The turbulent nature of the Rhone caused extensive damage to the building. The first arch of the bridge collapsed in 1603, and then, in 1605, and collapsed three more arches. However, in 1628 all four sections have been restored. New collapse occurred a few years after the opening of the renovated bridge in 1633 two arches collapsed, and in 1669, after severe flooding on the Rhone were only four sections. Till our days there were only the four of stairs and the chapel of St. Nicholas on the second pylon, mixed Romanesque-Gothic style.

Two-storey chapel of St. Nicholas, located in the center of the dilapidated bridge, " served as the burial place of Saint Benedict, the patron Saint of Provence. In 1674 the relics of the Saint were transferred to Celestins the Church of Avignon, but during the French revolution, the relics of the Saint were lost.
