Bagrati temple, located in the city of Kutaisi on top of a hill Ukimerioni, is the greatest monument of architecture and culture of Georgia. The temple was built in X-XI century during the reign of the first king of United Georgia Bagrat III, in honor of which bears its name. Until recently, the Cathedral was in ruins, but now restored.
The construction of this magnificent Cathedral began at the end of the X century and ended in 1003, after which the Cathedral was consecrated in honor of the assumption of the virgin. Previously Bagrati temple was a huge Palace and temple complex. It is here noted that all the most important events of those times. In addition to the spiritual purpose of the temple was a symbol of United Georgia, which has its explanation: in the XI century in the Cathedral took place the coronation of David the Builder – king who United Georgia in one state.
Bagrat temple until the XVII century was intact. It was decorated with rich carvings and mosaics. The Church was badly damaged roof of the Cathedral – it was almost completely demolished.
Bagrat temple belongs to the best Caucasian samples of medieval architecture. Its main features are distinguished, harmonious proportions and exquisite decor. The Church building has a square shape. The main entrance to the monastery is decorated with an arched portico. Capitals covered with stucco decorations, and the walls and floors were decorated with mosaics, some fragments of which can still be seen. Well seen and fragments of a fresco of the virgin in the South lobby. Inside the temple is no different from a regular Church – the altar, icons and candlesticks. As for the ornaments and bas-reliefs of the temple, they are very similar to the filigree jewelers ancient times.
In 1994 in the city of Kutaisi founded the Foundation for the revival of Bagrati Cathedral. In the same year the Church was included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of UNESCO world Heritage. Now the temple is almost completely restored. August 17, 2012 at the dome of the Church has established the 2m bronze cross with a weight of 300 kg.
