Flora Fountain Photo: Flora Fountain

Amazing sculptural composition the Flora Fountain is located in the city of Mumbai in the area, "Hutama Chowk", which translated means "Martyrs ' Square", which is located in the southern part of the city near the famous business district of Fort.

The fountain was built in 1864 and depicts the Roman goddess Flora. The initiator of the fountain became the agri-horticultural society of Western India, the main architect of the project was made by Norman Shaw. Originally the fountain was named after the then Governor of Bombay sir Bartley Frers, during which the city was upset at a very fast rate. But then he received a new name in honor of a beautiful goddess of flowers and spring Flora, whose shape is crowned with all the construction. Originally the fountain was to be installed in Gardens, Victoria, as part of the architectural composition of Abundance, but the final decision about the place of installation of the fountain was made in favor of the street Dabaghi Naoroji. The fountain was installed in place of the Gate of the Church – one of the three inputs to the ruined Fort of the Old City.

Flora fountain is a wonderful sculptural composition at the top is the statue of the goddess Flora carved by James Forsyth of the so-called "Portland stone" - a form of limestone, which is extracted in one of the southwestern counties of England. Also, the composition includes figures of beautiful women, mythical animals, dolphins, fish, shells.

On the same square, opposite the Fountain in 1960 a Monument was erected to the Martyrs, dedicated to all who died in the struggle for independence, depicting the figures of two patriots, holding the burning torch.
