The Cathedral of Bamberg is one of the Imperial cathedrals of the country. It is located near the Old town hall and is considered a symbol of the city. At the very beginning of its history the temple was located building, which was converted into a Basilica by order of king Henry II in 1004. In 1007 was created diocese of Bamberg, this was done on purpose in order to promote the spread of Christianity in these lands.

In 1012, the Cathedral was consecrated, but in 1081 suffered from a major fire, restoration work was completed in 1111 year. In the XIII century on the site of the Cathedral reappeared the temple, built in the Gothic style and decorated quite modestly.

On the corners of the temple towers are of different heights. Despite subsequent adjustment, over time the appearance of the structure practically did not change, and the influences of modernity has touched only the interior. So in 1678 the decoration of the Cathedral and its altars were decorated in the Baroque style and was not changed until almost the mid-nineteenth century.

Currently the Cathedral is considered to be the main attraction of Bamberg, it is decorated with numerous statues and sculptures that have become classics of the art of medieval Germany. In the Central portal presents a track called "the last judgment", created in the XII century. In the Eastern side of the Cathedral is the portal Gates Adam, his creation was engaged in the XIII century sculptor from Reims, whose name is unknown.

Three-aisled Basilica is decorated with two covered galleries. One of them is the famous equestrian statue of the Bamberg horseman 1230.
