The Wat Mahathat is an important centre of Buddhism and Vipassana meditation. He is one of the oldest in Bangkok, and was built to house relics of the Buddha.

Wat Mahathat is included in the list of the ten Royal temples in Thailand of the highest level. His full name with all titles sounds like Wat Mahathat of Guardiaregia of Recoverymanager.

The temple was built in the heyday of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in the 18th century and was originally known as Wat Salak. When the capital was moved to Bangkok, Wat Mahathat took an advantageous position between the Grand Palace and the Central Palace. So it began to pass Royal ceremonies and funerals. In 1803 he received the Royal Title and the name of Wat Mahathat.
