Wat Ratcha Arisarum is the first Buddhist temple, the highest level and contains in its official name with additional prefix Ratchawararam indicating his rank. The temple is one of the oldest in Bangkok, it was founded in the period of prosperity of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya.

The history of the name Wat Ratcha Arisarum and tells the story of the life of the country. The original name of the temple was Wat Chom Thong, then king Rama II renamed it Ratcha the ohrot, which means “restored the son of the king”, who later was crowned king Rama III. The present name of the temple is a linguistic variation of the original name.

According to legend, the crown Prince went to war with the Burmese army, exciting Thai territory before an important battle, he and his men stopped for the night at Wat Ratcha Arisarum, where the Abbot held a special rite of blessing. The Prince promised that if he and his army will win – he will be back and will work on the reconstruction of the temple, his word, the Prince kept.

The architecture of the temple is designed in the so-called Royal style: it feels both Thai and Chinese influence. Wat Ratcha Arisarum was the first in Thailand, built without the typical Thai decorations on the roofs of viharn (main building) and ubosot (hall for religious ceremonies).

In the temple store old records recipes Thai herbal medicine, which are an important artifact for the modern doctors of the country. To date, survived 50 records carved in marble slabs, from 92 previously existed.
