The Museum Frederic Mares was opened in 1948 in one of the buildings relating to the Grand Royal Palace, which is located in the center of Barcelona, in the Gothic quarter. Previously, for many years, this building was a convent. Initially, the Museum took four rooms. The 70th year of the 20th century, the Museum's collection has increased dramatically, and it has grown considerably to present to their size.

The initiator of the Museum and its founder, art collector and sculptor Frederic mares, who all his life had collected various items. His collection formed the basis of the Museum collection. The most significant Museum exhibition – a collection of sculptures, which represented mainly by the works of the masters of Catalonia and other Spanish regions. The collection is divided into 6 sections according to time periods: the sculpture of the classical period, represented by the cultures of Ancient Greece, Ancient Iberia, Carthage, Romanesque period, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and sculpture of the 19th century Catalonia.

The Museum also presents an exposition of paintings, mostly depicting the virgin and Child or the Holy Family, as well as crucifixes, crosses.

There is extremely interesting exposition, constituting the so-called sentimental Museum, are subjects of a life. Here you can find a collection of Smoking pipes, fans, labels from cigars, coins, combs, theatrical posters, binoculars, lottery tickets and even children's toys over the years. It is unknown how many of these items are interested in at the time of the collector Mares, but always surprising, interesting and touching to consider them, knowing that they once belonged to someone and may have had some special value for that person.
