Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius of Rostov in Barnaul is located in the Central area of the city, at the intersection of Pushkin street and square of Spartacus. The Church was built in 1829-1840, as a house Church with factory hospice by the decree of the Tobolsk Theological Consistory with funding from mining of non-resurrection plant.
Unlike the rest of the complex structures of the Demidov square, the Church was built fast enough. The solemn consecration of the temple in the name of St. Dimitry of Rostov was held in April 30, 1831, the Project has developed a Church factory architects L. I. Ivanov, Ya. Popov and A. I. Molchanov. The paintings were made by academician of painting M. I. Myagkov.
In 1905, near the Church of St. Dimitry of Rostov was erected a chapel, from the right and left sides, at the entrance to the garden Dimitry temple housed a small gate. The author of this project were made by Barnaul architect I. F. Nosovich. For the chapel of the St. Petersburg academician Frolov donated a gorgeous mosaic image of Christ the Savior's crown of thorns.
From 1831 - 1883 the Church was used as a house Church in the Altai Mountain Board, from 1883 to 1896 - the Main Department of the Altai mining district, and in the period from 1896 to 1918 under the main administration of the Altai territory. In June 1920 the Church of St. Dmitry of Rostov closed. With 1921 within its walls the Museum of fine arts, but by the end of the decade, traces of the Museum with its collection lost.
In Soviet times the rotunda temple round the main volume and the small projections in the classical style, was added on the North side nondescript outbuilding. The building of the Church fell into disrepair. In the spring of 1991 were burned out and collapsed dome. In 1994, the dilapidated temple was returned to the diocese, and then began its reconstruction. In may 2009, over a Church dome set up a cross. The restoration of the temple in honor of St. Dimitry of Rostov ended on 9 November 2012
Today it is a functioning Orthodox Church, which is an architectural monument of Federal value.
