Cemetery of Certosa" on the outskirts of Bologna appeared in 1801, much later, as here, in the 14th century was founded the Carthusian monastery of San Girolamo. Today it is one of the most famous cemeteries in Europe. Already at the entrance from the street via della Certosa, you can see a huge monument dedicated to the Italian sports heroes - Olinda Radji, Amedeo Ruggeri and others, and among the tombs and gravestones are located imposing sculptures – masterpieces of world art. However, the Certosa is not only a place where you can enjoy works of art, but also a kind of "time machine", which reveals the ancient traditions and customs. Moreover, it is here that the masters of the past have left a message for future generations – the cemetery is called the modern equivalent of the podium.

On the territory of the Certosa members are buried famous and most influential families of Bologna – Jansteen, Zoboli, Maragoni, Tomba, Parenti, Gambini and others. Among the sculptors who worked on the tombs and family vaults, which can be called De Maria, Putti, Bartolini, Led, here noted artists of Basoli, Palagi and Fancelli.

Certosa arose as a result of changes in legislation, according to which from the late 18th century all the cemeteries were located outside the city. The edict of Napoleon, published a few years later, only reinforced this rule. At the same time the architects have come up with extravagant monuments and projects of private chapels for the noble inhabitants of Bologna, artists began to decorate the tombs, and sculptors – to do a memorial piece.

Here, in the cemetery of the Certosa, buried politician, Mingetty, painters Morandi and Saetti, literary greats Carducci and Baccelli, composer Respighi, manufacturers Maserati, Weber and Zanichelli. The attention of visitors is attracted by the exquisite chapel of a family Pass. Here lie the remains of many senior officers in the memory of the fallen during the Second World war on the Russian front dedicated War memorial. The feat of soldiers and partisans who died in the First World, perpetuates a vast crypt.

In the 19th century on the territory of the Certosa were carried out excavation work, during which there was discovered an ancient tomb of the era of the Etruscans. Here brought together scientists from around the world, and as a result were made startling discoveries – today these findings can be seen in the Municipal Archaeological Museum.
