Valterplatts this is the main square of Bolzano, located in the heart of the old town and is named after the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide. It was here, on this square, hosts a Christmas and Flower markets, as well as celebrated the Festival of Pumpkins. By the way, the famous Christmas market gathers annually to a million visitors!
Valterplatts was founded in 1808, the year in place of the vineyard that was owned by the Bavarian Royal family. King Maximilian sold the vineyard to the municipality of Bolzano for 3 thousand florins with the condition that he was turned into a square. Gradually around began to build houses and hotels – was one of the first "Hotel Greif". In those years, Bolzano, thanks to its mild climate and beautiful surrounding landscapes and well-preserved medieval buildings, has become a popular tourist destination. To accommodate the numerous tourists were aristocrats and built the first luxury hotels.
In 1889, the year in the center of the square was a statue of the poet Walther von der Vogelweide, who lived in 1168-1228-m years. During the Nazi regime, it was removed from here, but later returned to his seat. Near visible Cathedral of Bolzano train station as well as a variety of historic buildings, which are now housed banks, cafes and restaurants. I must say that over the years, the area has had different names – Maximilian-Platz in honor of the Bavarian king, Johannes Platz, Valterplatts, then the area of Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Madonna and, finally, again Valterplatts. For its not very long history, this area has seen many historical figures – Napoleon, Emperor Franz Joseph, his heir, Charles I, of the Italian king Victor Emmanuel III and Mussolini.
