The gardens of Santa Barbara was founded in 1955 and located in the northeastern part of the Episcopal Palace, on the hill. These gardens are one of the most beautiful places in Portugal.
The gardens in the Italian Renaissance style located along the Western wing of this historic building, which dates from the XIV century. The West wing of the Palace – the oldest part of the Palace, which today houses the municipal library. Near the gardens of Santa Barbara are the Church of Misericordia and Cathedral of Braga.
In the center of the garden is a fountain, crowned by a statue of Saint Barbara, after whom is named the garden. According to legend, Saint Barbara, in addition to the gift to save from sudden and violent death, the gift belongs to save from the storm on the sea and from the fire on land.
Decorative plaques installed throughout the garden, indicate that the design and landscape architecture was engaged by Jose Cardoso da Silva.
