The Cathedral of Braga is one of the most important architectural monuments in the city. Because of its history and artistic expression, the Cathedral is also one of the most magnificent structures in the country.

The construction of the Cathedral was begun by Bishop Pedro in 1071. In 1089, was completed the construction of the Eastern chapels. After a break, due to the religious situation in the country, the construction of the Cathedral was resumed, and lasted until the mid 13th century.

The original building of the Cathedral was made in the Burgundian Romanesque style. Later the Cathedral was built a new chapel, predgradie in the Gothic style, and today the Cathedral is a combination of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque and Manueline.

Inside, the Cathedral is divided into three naves, a transept and an apse with five chapels. Above the Central nave are two old body. Stands out the main chapel of the apse, restored in 1509 Archbishop Diogo de South by the architect joão de Castilho.

The facade is made in the Gothic style, the outer wall of the main chapel is decorated with a sculpture of the Madonna nursing the Infant, 16th century, which is located between the arms of Portugal and the arms of Bishop Diogo de South. Some chapels were built in the 14th century such as the Royal chapel, the burial place of the parents of the first king of Portugal - Henry of Burgundy and Teresa of León, and the chapel of Glory, where is the tomb of Archbishop Gonzalo Pereira, guarded by six stone lions.
