The Roma street parklands is located on 16 hectares in the heart of Brisbane, close to the city transit station and the railway station Roma street, where the Park is accessible on foot.
Roma street is the world's largest subtropical garden in the city center. Here you can stroll through a variety of thematic paths and flowerbeds, relax in the recreational areas, wander through the paths across multi-level water flows, and to admire the works of 16 local artists.
The local aborigines for thousands of years used the area as a place for meetings and ceremonies. In 1825 the Roma street parklands has become a part of the original settlement of Brisbane, and in 1875 at the Roma street station was built the main railway linking Brisbane to Ipswich and Toowoomba. Soon the station became the main warehouse in the city, and from 1911 to 1934 along with the surrounding areas regularly reconstructed to maintain the flow of goods. In 1920, a large-scale excavation project, in which the territory was taken 554300 cubic meters of earth, forever altered this mountainous terrain, creating a current artificial mound and the border of the former albert Park. During the Second World war, the station Roma street was a key node for transporting military equipment and airlift of troops to the North.
After the war the station Roma street was converted into a metro station and a stop for long-distance trains. In 1991, due to the increasing mechanization of transportation and handling, and the use of large-tonnage containers, the functions of the warehouse were transferred to the area of acacia ridge. In 2000 on the former site of the station began construction of the Park, in the territory which was included albert Park. In April 2001, the new Park was officially opened to the public.
Today in the Park outdoor amphitheater is located, previously named the Amphitheater albert Park. On the stage regularly plays Theatre of Queensland and Queensland Shakespeare troupe, as well as touring theatres. Here are ideas and different orchestras, for example, in October 1983 at the amphitheater was played a concert of Strauss under the stars to music by Johann Strauss. Before in the local Botanical gardens Brisbane was built the stage and the river stage, here was the traditional Christmas carols.
The Park is home to a number of Australian plants and flowers from around the world. Due to the fact that a collection of plants with different flowering seasons, the Park all year round is immersed in colorful splendor.
