Watch tower, with a height of 83 meters, was built in the XIII century It served as a symbol of the aspirations of the citizens of medieval towns to freedom.

The upper octagonal portion was completed at the end of the XV century With the height of the 366th stairs offers a magnificent panoramic view of the city and its environs. Here are 49 bells, creating carion – sonorous bells ringing. The most important – victory bell – cast in 1680, and weighs about 6000 kg and a diameter up to two meters. Currently in the tower of old letters stored on fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.

Watch tower acted as the primary vantage point, from where it was possible to notice from afar the enemy. Through the main entrance you enter into the courtyard of rectangular shape, where a flight of stairs you can climb to the gallery. On the lower floor of the building houses the archaeological Museum, containing historical relics and art objects.

In the niche above the entrance, is a statue of the virgin Mary, under which there is a small balcony with an iron railing. Hence, until 1769 declared all laws and regulations relating to the life of citizens.

At different times and historical periods Belfort were mistreated, as evidenced by the numerous scars on its walls. But despite this, the Watch tower survived until our days and is an important historical and architectural part of Bruges.
