The Atomium Photo: Atomium

The Atomium was built in 1958 for the world exhibition “Expo” and was the symbol of the atomic age and the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. He is a model of a molecule of iron with a height of 102 m and weighing 2,400 tons, consisting of spheres and covered by a steel shell. Six spheres connected by a pipe hidden in the corridors and escalators for access of visitors into the design. In the middle of them feature high-speed Elevator which brings you up to the restaurant and the observation deck in the tallest balloon structures.

Initially the monument was erected during the cold war as a demonstration of the victory of socialism over capitalism. This majestic monument, shimmering with dazzling brilliance, carries a cultural and educational purpose, as evidenced inside the exposition about the research work in the field of nuclear energy.

Originally built only for a few days the Atomium stands to this day, symbolizing the modernity of the country and endless faith in the peaceful use of nuclear energy and a favorable outcome of world history.

With a 102-metre high observation platform offers a beautiful panoramic view of Brussels. Downstairs there is a small shop with Souvenirs.
