Bourgas lake is the largest natural body of water of Bulgaria covers an area of 3 thousand hectares. The lake is located in the Central part of Burgas, both banks occupy residential areas – Dolno-Ezerovo and Mountain. Often you can find another name of the lake – Wai. Since 1997 the area Wai declared a protected area.

Bourgas lake is essentially the estuary, which became a coastal lake. As befits the estuary, it is salty due to the small channel that connects it to the sea. Fresh salt water the lake receives regularly attracts a reservoir solelyubivy fish.

Also from the West lake is fed by the rivers of Aitos, Kucharska and Candidare. From the sea the lake is separated by a sand spit, where today there is the Burgas industrial zone.

Wai is among the three most significant habitats areas of high humidity dwelling in it water intensive birds with the Bulgarian shores of the Black sea. Thanks to the initiative of bird watchers regularly appear to 260 species of birds, depending on the time of year. It is worth noting that 9 out of 260 species included in the Red book and found a lot of rare in Bulgarian species of birds.

Few places in Bulgaria can be observed in one area of small colonies of nesting white herons and yellow along with the night herons. In winter the lake is inhabited by small cormorants and Dalmatian pelicans, bright and unusual red-breasted goose. Burgas lake also attracts migratory birds.
