Located in the centre of Burgos Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and majestic Gothic Church buildings not only in Spain but throughout Europe. Its construction was begun July 20, 1221 by king Ferdinando III. Built on the site of the old Romanesque Basilica, the Cathedral must be the main temple of the Kingdom of Castille. The altar of the Cathedral was consecrated in 1260, after which work on the construction of the temple were stopped almost 200 years. Final date of completion of construction is considered 1567 – it was then completed spire towering above the ceiling of the temple.

The Cathedral of Burgos is a real masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture. The main facade of the Cathedral facing the Plaza de Santa maría. In the lower level of the facade has three arches, the Central one is the main entrance to the building. The Central part of the facade is decorated with a large window-rose. The third floor is a gallery, in which are placed the statues of the kings of Castile. Above is the magnificent statue of the virgin and child. Crowning the facade is two openwork pointed towers with spires. The oldest, the South façade of the building is notable for its portal, which is a true masterpiece of sculpture from the 13th century. The portal is decorated with magnificent statues of Christ and the twelve apostles. The Cathedral has a Latin cross plan with three naves, transept crossed. The main altar of the Cathedral, created in the 16th century by the brothers Rodrigo and Martin de La Aya, decorate in the style of the Gothic image of Santa Maria La Mayor.
