In Plaza de San Juan, located to the North-East of Burgos Cathedral is the ancient Church of San Lesmes-Abad. The Church is dedicated to Saint Lesmes, is the patron Saint of the city and revered by its inhabitants. Lesmes was Abbot, who lived in Burgos in the 11th century and founded the once a monastery on this place. The temple was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century on the ruins of the chapel of St. John the Evangelist, was once part of a monastic complex.

The Church is a pretty massive stone building, the most prominent elements of which are high bell tower and the main portal. The portal that was created by Simon de Colonia, made in the form of a cascade of Lancet arches, decorated magnificent, finely executed patterns. Gate portal with reliefs depicting episodes of the life of the Abbot of Lesmes were created and installed in 1997 on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the Saint.

In plan the Church is a three-aisled Church with a transept. In the main aisle near the altar lie the remains of the Holy Lesmes. In the aisle on the left is the chapel, where the altar is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The altar is a fine example of the Spanish Renaissance. In the nave on the right side is placed a magnificent altar of the Holy cross, created with the participation of masters from Antwerp in the late 15th century and is a true work of art.

Currently the Church of San Lesmes-Abad is in effect. In one of the Church choirs hosted the exhibition of paintings.
