In the area of Gamonal former suburbs of Burgos, on the Rue de Vitoria is situated the ancient Church of Santa Maria La real y Antigua de Gamonal.
The Church building that we see today was built in the Gothic style at the turn of the 13th and 14th century on the site of an old Romanesque Church, which preserved one of the chapiter. There is a legend that in this place once there was a miraculous appearance of the virgin Mary, which was dedicated built the Basilica.
The Church building, built of stone, is characterized by simplicity and rigor of execution. The most eye-catching element of the facade is quite massive tower with buttresses geometric shape. In plan the building has the shape of a Latin cross with one nave and a rectangular apse. The interior of overlap with vaulted ceilings. Notable in the interior columns topped by capitals that are decorated with ornaments with floral motifs. The main portal of the building has the shape of arches and decorated with a tympanum with a sculptured scene of the coronation of the virgin Mary. Inside the Church hosted a collection of sculptures of the period 13-18 centuries, of which the most notable are the Crucifix, the statue of the virgin and the sculpture of the Annunciation, Dating from the 13th / 14th century.
