The mosque Ulu Camii or Great mosque, was built in Bursa during the reign of Bayezid I Yildirim (Lightning). Triumphant victorious in the battle of Nicopolis on the Danube armies of the crusaders, Sultan conquered Bosnia, won Bulgaria, made Wallachia to pay tribute and established a protectorate over Byzantium. According to legend, before the battle, Bayezid I took a vow in case of victory to build 20 mosques, but by winning, decided that it would be sufficient alone, but with 20 domes. The construction of the mosque lasted four years and was completed in 1400.

The mosque is located in the heart of the Old city, the Bazaar. It was the first in the Ottoman Empire, a multi-domed structure, made in a beautiful Arabic style. Still Ulu Cami is the creation of architect Ali Negara - serves as a model for the construction of mosques throughout the country. It has everything expected in Ottoman mosques - fountain for religious ablutions, the mihrab, the Minbar, the carpets on the floor and inscriptions from the Koran on the walls.

Several times the Ulu Jami has been destroyed. For the first time this happened during the invasion of Timur. Later the building was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1855 and his recovery was engaged by the French architect Leon Parville. It was he who introduced in early Ottoman architecture saturated with the elements of Baroque, reflected in the design of calligraphic inscriptions and decorations of the tops of the minarets. Unfortunately, the fire of 1889 again damaged the mosque, but now it is restored.

The Foundation of the mosque is made in the form of a rectangle with sides 63 and 50 meters. The building of the mosque includes 30 of the support pylons: 18 of them are located in the walls of the mosque and 12 inside the building. These majestic pillars support a powerful twenty domes of the mosque. The building has three entrances (North, East and West), and in the center of the room is an unusual marble fountain with pool for ritual ablutions. It consists of three huge bowls placed one over another and highlights from round Windows in the dome above him. The interior of the mosque is decorated with huge 192 calligraphic styles in diwani and kufi, listing all of the 99 names of Allah. The main gate of the mosque is made without the use of nails. They are made of walnut wood and is considered a masterpiece in wood. Thanks to the large dome light inside the building, a good illumination.

Majestic mosque Ulu Camii, which area is 5000 square meters remains in Bursa the most monumental building. Due to the unusual interior decorations and original samples of wood carving Ulu Jami is considered one of the most interesting historical sites in Turkey.
