Stampace is one of the oldest districts of Cagliari, which until recently was occupied by numerous craft shops (carpentry, shoemaking, blacksmithing) and which still cherish the traditions of their ancestors. This is a simple quarter, devoid of monumental structures and disproportionate urban designs, but can boast an abundance of ancient churches. For example, the Church of San Michele, once part of a large religious complex was built in the mid 17th century in the style of Spanish Baroque to the Jesuits.
The Church of Santa Anna was built in the late 18th century. During the Second World war it was seriously damaged, but was later restored. The Church is designed in the Baroque style and with the two sides framed towers. It is decorated with columns and pilasters, and three domes of different shapes and sizes are crowned the building. It is stored in a wooden crucifix of the 14th century and the altar made of polychrome marble. In the right wing of the transept noteworthy neoclassical altar of black marble – work Andrea Galassi (early 19th century). There you can see the marble statue of the virgin Mary with the Infant. In addition, the Church houses a wooden sculpture depicting saints Joachim and Anne with her daughter Mary, and a picture of Giovanni Margiotti with the image of Christ the Redeemer.
The Church of Santa Chiara is located close to Piazza Yenne. Together with the adjacent monastery it was founded in the late 13th – early 14th centuries for the community of nuns-poor Clares, who lived here until the end of the 19th century. In 1943, the year the structure was seriously damaged during the bombing of the city, and the monastery had to demolish remained only ruins. Next to them is the Church bell tower. The facade of Santa Chiara remarkable portal with architrave tie beam, and inside you can admire the huge gilded wooden altarpiece. In the crypt of the Church can see the foundations of the middle Ages.
Another interesting Church Stampace – Chiesa dei Santi. This small temple was built in the late 18th century on the site of a 16th-century, which in turn stood on the site of the Church of the 13th century. Chiesa dei Santi is one of the most important religious buildings in Cagliari, as connected with the cult of the most revered by the local inhabitants of Saint – Martyr of Efisio. According to the legend, this is the place where today stands the Church, the Saint was arrested and sent to the Burrow, where he was beheaded. The relics of St. Efisio now stored in a niche in a massive altar made of polychrome marble. In the second chapel on the right you can see the statue of the 17th century, depicting the Saint.
Finally, in Stampace worth visiting the Botanical garden with a huge collection of tropical plants and the Bastion of Santa Croce is the most spectacular of all.
