The Flavian amphitheatre, located in the town of Pozzuoli near Naples in the Italian region of Campania, is the third largest Roman amphitheater in Italy. The larger one only the Roman Colosseum and the amphitheatre of Capua. Presumably, the Flavian amphitheatre was designed by the same architects who worked on the Coliseum. Its construction began during the reign of Emperor Vespasian and was completed under his son, the Emperor Titus. Arena of the amphitheater could accommodate up to 20 thousand spectators. It is here in the 305-year were executed by the Holy Puncture, which later became the patron Saint of Naples, San Gennaro is the patron Saint of Naples.
The interior of the Flavian amphitheatre has survived almost intact, and today you can see the fragments of the means by which cells are raised up into the arena. The dimensions of the amphitheatre is still unbelievable – 147 to 117 meters (arena was equal h meters).
The Flavian amphitheatre was the second Roman amphitheatre, built in Pozzuoli. The first one was smaller in size (h meters) and elders. It was built near the site of the crossing roads, going to Naples, Capua and Kumu. After the eruption of the volcano Solfatara the amphitheatre was covered with ashes and was abandoned, and in the Middle ages with its external walls were removed marble slabs. In 1839-45-m and 1880-82-m years here has been excavated, but, unfortunately, later than a small amphitheater was almost completely destroyed during the construction of the railway line Rome – Naples. Survived only a dozen arches.
