Canberra theatre Centre, opened in June 1965, is the main Australian theatre space, moreover, created on the initiative of the government.

The center is located in the heart of Canberra, close to the Legislative Assembly of the Australian Capital Territory and the Parliamentary triangle (the government buildings).

The Centre was originally composed of two separate buildings – directly Canberra Theatre Games and scenes that were connected by a closed transition. The theatre has a capacity of 1200 seats, was created as a place for performances of national and international companies, and the Gaming scene for up to 310 people, was designed for small local theater groups. At the time, the complex also included a small gallery of fine arts and a restaurant.

In the mid-1990s, has begun a two-year consultation process between the administration of the Theatre Centre and architects, which ended with the demolition of the old building Gaming scene and its reconstruction as a new site. The opening of the new building scenes took place in may 1998. Instead of the traditional fan-shaped auditorium and the arcuate scenes that were used in all theatres of Australia, built in the 20th century, was built semi-circular room in the form of a drum with partners and balconies. Occupancy increased almost twice - up to 618 people. The design of the new gaming scene was borrowed from Greek theatre and English theaters in the time of Queen Elizabeth (16th century). Utility room – dressing rooms, rooms for artists, wardrobe and lobby with bar and cafe like envelop "drum" scene.

Over the years the Theater Center on the stage set of the greatest works of literary classics and performed advanced theatrical groups of the world. The beginning of the 21st century was marked by the appearance on the scene and traditional aboriginal art, for example in 2006 there were dance theatre aboriginal "Bangarra".
