The Stephen the Great Park is one of the oldest and most beautiful parks of Chisinau. Located in the centre of the Moldovan capital he had almost two centuries, is considered a favorite destination of most local residents. In Soviet times, this Park was named after A. S. Pushkin, who once loved to rest here. And after the collapse of the USSR and Moldova gained independence, it was named in honor of the most revered of the Moldavian ruler Stephen the Great (Stefan cel Mare).
Bookmark the new Park occurred in 1818, with the active assistance of the spouse of the Governor of Bessarabia A. Bakhmetiev, the site chosen by the Russian Emperor Alexander I. There were planted about 4 thousand seedlings of various plants, including exotic. In the late 1860s, the Park was enclosed with a fine iron fence, which is well preserved to our days. In 1885 with funds donated by the townspeople, was a monument to Alexander Pushkin.
One of the symbols of the Moldovan Republic is considered established in 1928 at the entrance to the Park is a monument to the ruler Stefan cel Mare, in whose reign the country reached its highest development.
In 1958, in the Park of Pushkin took place the opening of the Alley of the classics of Romanian literature, consisting of 12 busts. Since independence, it was supplemented by another 13 busts of famous figures of the Moldavian culture and sculptures by Romanian poets and writers.
The Park, covering an area of about 7 hectares, has 7 inputs. At various times it housed pools with fountains, various monuments and sculptures, urban hall of fame and children's cafe. In our time, the Park contains more than 50 species of trees and shrubs, including rare plums, Pissard, Chinese Wisteria, the canadian bunduk and many others. The age of several trees already reaches about 160 years.
Modern fleet of Stephen the Great is widely used as a venue for various festivals and celebrations.
