The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is one of the oldest universities in the world in which the educational process has never stopped, since the very first day of its Foundation. Also the University is the oldest University in Portugal, one of the biggest higher education institutions and major research institutions in the country. The University has eight departments, which release a bachelors and masters in the arts, Humanities, social and natural Sciences, mathematics, sports and technical Sciences. The University has and doctoral studies. The University has approximately 20,000 students from all over the world.

The University was founded by the king of Portugal Dinis. Initially the school was located in Lisbon, were created by the faculty of Humanities, faculty of medicine, law and Church law. Soon, however, the University moved to Coimbra, in particular, because of the conflicts students with residents. In Lisbon, the University has moved several times and finally settled in the building of the Royal Palace of Coimbra in 1537. The University has its own emblem, each faculty has its official color.

On campus is the famous Joanine library - about the chapel, built in 1724. The library is located in three large rooms and has about 300,000 books. The University has five main campuses. There is a chapel of St. Miguel, built in the Manueline style. Noteworthy is the fact that the chapel was built over several centuries. Inside the chapel is the organ of the XVIII century, its walls decorated with tiles-Azulejos.
