Museum of paper money in Corfu is a unique Museum of Greece. This is one of the few museums of this kind in the world with the most complete collection. The Museum was founded in 1981 and is located on the first floor of a historic building, which was built around 1840 by the local architect of Ioánnis of Chronis. Once this building was the first branch of the Ionian Bank in Corfu.
The Museum presents a rich collection of banknotes, coins, Bank records, accounting books, receipts, print, archival documents, photographs, etc. the Museum has a virtually complete collection of Greek banknotes, starting with the first, which was printed in 1822, and until recently, were withdrawn from circulation in 2002 with the introduction of the "Euro". This exhibition demonstrates the full change history of Greek banknotes and has about 2000 items.
Among the rarest of Museum exhibits is to provide a banknote with the image of the Byzantine Church Hagia Sophia in Constantinople without Ottoman minarets, released in 1920 and have never been circulated. Interest and banknotes issued during the first Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias. The Museum also contains rare banknote in the art Deco style, printed in France, with the image of Hermes, the banknotes issued by the occupiers during the Second World war, and a banknote face value 100 billion drachmas period of hyperinflation in 1944.
In 2005, after reconstruction and the radical reorganization of the collection in accordance with the highest modern standards, the Museum was opened to the public. In July 2007, the second floor of the building was equipped to host art exhibitions and other cultural events.
In the Museum you can see a visual presentation of the modern manufacturing process of banknotes, ranging from design to engraving with printing.
Today, the Museum of paper money is one of the most visited museums in Corfu.
