The Cathedral of Agios Spyridon, located in the centre of Corfu town (Kerkyra), is the largest Orthodox Church on the island. Originally, the Church of St. Spyridon were in the area of Sirocco, but in 1590, the temple was built at its present location. Venetian architecture of the temple is typical for all Old town, and its bell tower is the tallest building in the city and can be seen even from the ferry, when you get close to the shoreline (the bell tower is also visible from any point in the city). The interior impresses with its grandeur and richness.
Saint Spyridon was born in 270 A. D. in the village of Assia in Cyprus. In his youth he was poor and humble shepherd. Later he married and had a daughter. After his wife's death he led a monastic life. Saint Spyridon participated in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325, where he denounced the heresy of the Arians, demonstrating a striking proof of the unity of God in the Holy Trinity. He performed many miracles and was revered during his lifetime. Saint Spyridon served as Bishop of the Cypriot city Trimifunta (district of Larnaca) until his death in 348 year. The relics of the Saint remained in Cyprus for 300 years after his death, and at the end of the 7th century were transported to Constantinople. In 1453, after the capture of Constantinople by the Turks, the relics of St. Spyridon were taken to the Island where they are stored today.
The locals are very revered Saint Spyridon and consider him a Keeper of Corfu. According to legend, on four occasions he saved the island from danger: in 1533 from hunger, in 1629 and 1673 from the plague years, and in 1716 from the invasion of the Ottoman invaders. The name "Spiridon" is a very common on the island. Five times a year power carried out of the temple and celebrated the solemn procession to the memory of St. Spyridon (December 12 – feast day of St., palm Sunday, Good Friday, on the first Sunday of November and the 12th of August).
Saint Spyridon is revered throughout the world. Every year in Corfu attracts thousands of pilgrims from all corners of the earth, to venerate his Holy relics.
