Lake Stimfalia lies in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese (nom Korinthia) on a plateau between the mountains of Kyllini and Oligarchs at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. The lake is approximately 42 km from the city of Corinth and is the largest lake in the Peloponnese.

The lake and its surroundings are mentioned in Greek mythology. According to legend, it was here that the legendary Hercules made his third feat and destroyed Simplistic birds. The name of the lake was named in honor of a character from Greek mythology Stempel, son of Elat.

Since ancient times the lake and feeding it karstic springs play an important role in the region's water supply and the irrigation of the surrounding valley is ideal for farmland. During the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian was built aqueduct, through which water from the lake was fed in Corinth.

Today Stimfalia – wetland lake and a significant portion of its surface covered with reeds. In the summer months the lake is almost completely dry. In the winter period, when the lake is maximally recruited water, its area reaches 3, 5 sq. km and the maximum depth is 10 m. the Lake and its surroundings are famous for rich flora and fauna. Special interest Stimfalia is for lovers of ornithology, as it is home to many different species of birds, including rare enough.

Definitely worth a visit and nearby Ecological Museum of Stymfalia, which will introduce you to the history and inhabitants of the lake and its environs. It was founded in 2009 and its main objective is to show the importance of harmonious existence and interaction between man and nature.

Today the lake is under threat of extinction and protected by the European organization for NATURA 2000.
