National Park Northern forest is located around the highest volcano in Diablotin, height of 1447 m above sea level. The volcano is located in the North of the island, 6 km from Portsmouth and 15 km from the capital of Dominica is Roseau. The Park is located on the highest parts of the mountain Diablotin. The last time the volcano was active about 30 000 years ago, and it was his last eruption.

Diablotin can be attributed to volcanoes. Its name is connected with a kind of Petrel Diablotin, which is a lot in this area. Another name of the birds are black-headed titannica, they live almost all the Caribbean Islands, and nests in trees. The world population of these birds today is about 4 thousand individuals.

On the slopes of a volcano in the forests there are two very rare subspecies of parrots of the Caribbean, which relate to local attractions. One of them is called parrot-Sisserou (its second name "the Imperial parrot or Imperial Amazon) and is the national bird and symbol of Dominica. Sisserou are found on the North-Eastern and Eastern slopes of the volcano Diablotin, in moist thickets of tropical forests. The number of birds is very small, so they are declared an endangered species and are protected by various organizations, including the laws of Dominica. Sisserou impressed by their appearance, both by size and coloring. These are the largest birds in the parrot, they reach a length of on average up to 50 cm, and its feathers are painted all colors of the rainbow: purple body, green on the back, black on the tail and the head and purple on the neck. The shoulders and on the inner side of the wings red poppies red feathers, and around eyes red-orange circles. Interestingly, captive birds live longer than in the wild, where their average age is 75 years. It is also known that cyssero – monogamous. Another kind is the Jacquot parrot or Аmazona arausiaca – green parrot with beautiful red neck. The Park has several observation platforms for bird watching.

In addition to parrots in the Park is found many other fauna: large tree frogs, more than 20 species of lizards, about 55 species of butterflies, 13 species of bats. In addition it is home to a large number of snakes, such as boa constrictor boa constrictor and venomous snakes have none. The Park is planted with ferns and trees with huge roots, characteristic of the tropics. Also there are plants that grow directly on the trunks of trees to get more sunlight. The total area of the Dominican national Park is more than 13, 5 acres.
