Beachy Head Photo: Beachy Head

Beachy head chalk cliff on the South coast of Britain, in the County of East Sussex, near Eastbourne. The height of the cliff 162 m, is the highest chalk cliff in the UK.

Chalk like rock was formed in geological period called the late Cretaceous period, 65 to 100 million years ago. Then this area was under water. In the Cenozoic era occurred tectonic uplift and, when I finished the ice age and formed the English channel, the white chalk cliffs of the Sussex coast acquired its present appearance. It is because of these rocks island of Britain got its Latin name Albion White.

White cliffs has long served as a landmark to sailors, but swimming around this Cape is quite dangerous, and in 1831 began the construction of a lighthouse Belle-just West of the promontory of Beachy head. He was put in operation since 1834, and in 1999, due to the erosion of the cliffs, the lighthouse had to be moved 15 meters inland. Lights Bel That is often hidden by fog or low clouds, and in 1902 opened the second lighthouse in the sea at the foot of Beachy head. The lighthouse worked three caretaker, and his lights were visible for 42 km in the open sea. In 1983, the lighthouse was fully automated.

Now this area of Sussex is a popular tourist attraction. West cliff at Beachy head is the group of chalk cliffs called the Seven sisters (although actually rocks eight, not seven). Between them is the village of Bjorling Gap, where there is a hotel and restaurant, and to the foot of the cliffs, accessed by a metal ladder mounted on the chalk wall.

Unfortunately, Beachy head is very popular among suicides. He ranks third in the world after the Golden gate bridge in San Francisco and the aokigahara forest in Japan. The earliest suicide was recorded here in the VII century. According to some, a year at Beachy head it happens to 20 deaths, but the statistics is closed, so as not to provoke potential suicides. Local religious charities regularly patrol the coast, are also always on the lookout for local bartenders and taxi drivers. The activists of these organizations believe that a detailed coverage of such suicides in the media provokes people.
