The Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew and the Emperor Charlemagne, was founded in the IX century. It is a Gothic hall Church with a high carved tower of Sandstone laid in the second half of the XIII century on the site of an older Church buildings.
Here was elected by the German emperors under the laws of the Golden Bulla, and here was their coronation in 1562-1792 years. Here are the masterpieces of art of the Gothic period, such as the altar of "the Sleeping Maria" of the XV century. The gallery features original pews of the fourteenth century and the magnificent frescoes of the middle of the XV century with scenes from the life of St. Bartholomew.
If you climb the 328 steps to the top, you can admire the panorama of the city from a height of 75 meters. Like most monuments of Frankfurt, there were extensive repair and restoration work in 1994 to 1200 anniversary of the city.
